The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST); an institution of The Aga Khan Development Network, completed a major phase II expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2018.

This expansion aimed at improving the Hospital’s quality of facilities and infrastructure to become an ultramodern 170 bed facility to increase its capacity as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to a tertiary care, referral, and teaching hospital.

The Phase II development focused on expanding key clinical services including a comprehensive cardiology programmer, oncology services and neurosciences, as well as the expansion of Orthopedics and Trauma, Diagnostic Imaging, Critical Care and Women and Child Health programmers.

The Hospital is JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, which offers Postgraduate Medical Education programs leading to Master of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Paediatrics and Child Health.

It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that are located across Tanzania.

Currently, 26 such clinics have been established across the country and linked to the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.

AKHST is seeking for enthusiastic, qualified, and experienced personnel as described below:

Registered Nurse – (4 Posts) at Mwanza

Reporting to: The Head of Nursing & Quality Care

POSITION SUMMARY He/she provides safe, competent, individualized nursing care to patients in outpatient and inpatient clinics in accordance with policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough head to toe assessment and reassessment to all patient at the hospital. Elements of assessment include presented complains and related details, pain assessment and risk assessment.
  • Provides safe, competent, individualized nursing care to patients with care needs ranging from basic to complex in accordance with policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms.
  • Checks and ensures neatness and cleanliness is maintained in the hospital.
  • Develop a program for evidence-based nursing triage in the Center.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based nursing program (nursing assessment in proper formats)
  • Ensure timely, comprehensive, and complete nursing documentation on unit specific forms as per standard.
  • Ensure quality delivery in nursing procedures (stabilization of emergencies, dressing, injections, etc.)
  • Identify abnormal finding during assessment, report to doctors and takes required actions.
  • Assesses patient environment for safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning of equipment’s used in direct patient.
  • Demonstrate safe handling and proper use of equipment’s used at the hospital and report related technical/functional issues.
  • Participate actively in patient /family & staff education as per identified needs.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control in the dressing/minor operation room.
  • Make sure that all Nurses and attendants know and practice their responsibilities accordingly.
  • Make sure that all facilities are available in nursing and treatment/procedure areas.
  • Should make sure that there is good relationship between nurses and patient regarding their services.
  • Make sure that all nursing procedures performed in the hospital are according to nursing guidelines or accepted standards of practice.
  • Attend clients in Reproductive Child Health (RCH) and HIV counselling services at the centre.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms while managing patient care.
  • Initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation in case of cardiac arrest.
  • Provide safe environment for the patients and him/ herself by following infection control policies.
  • Evaluates the level of patients’ satisfaction and takes appropriate measures in case of discontent.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety activities like incident reporting, identification of issues, execution of interventions etc.
  • Ensure active leadership Quality Program such Infection prevention and Control and relevant quality bodies.
  • Support doctors in developing referral systems and facilitating transfer of patients.
  • Submits monthly reports to the hospital Nurse in charge for nursing activities.
  • Any other roles assigned by the Supervisor or his/her Designee.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Diploma in Nursing from recognized Collage or School of Nursing.
  • Current registration with the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC).
  • Maintains a Valid Nursing Licensure in the United Republic of Tanzania.
  • Minimum of 2 Years of experience in nursing practice

Enrolled Nurse – (1 Post) at Mwanza

Reporting to: The Head of Nursing & Quality Care

Position Summary

He/she provides safe, competent, individualized nursing care to patients at the hospital in accordance with policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • He/She Conducts thorough head to toe assessment and reassessment to all patient in the hospital. Elements of assessment include presented complains and related details, pain assessment and risk assessment.
  • Identify abnormal finding during assessment, report to doctors and takes required actions.
  • Provides safe, competent, individualized nursing care to patients with care needs ranging from basic to complex in accordance with policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms.
  • Assesses patient environment for safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning of equipment’s used in direct patient.
  • Should give supportive measures, instruction and reassurance for patients while they are in the hospital.
  • Should perform nursing procedure according to standard guidelines or accepted practices.
  • Participate in maintaining neatness and cleanliness of the nursing work areas.
  • Present herself/himself in a neat and clean uniform and use good communication skills with the patient and other staff.
  • Should make sure nursing areas and treatment/procedure areas have supplies and ready for patients.
  • Prepare, do, and pack equipment for sterilization according to established procedures.
  • Assist Medical Officers while performing small procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe handling and proper use of equipment’s used at the hospital and report related technical/functional issues.
  • To provide comprehensive clinical care to all patients attended at the hospital according to the set of standard and practice.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in implementation of quality improvement and patient safety interventions.
  • Perform risk assessment and takes preventive actions to avoid adverse effects.
  • Seek assistance wherever indicated to verify unusual findings or assess complicated patients.
  • Plan and prioritizes nursing interventions based of clinical condition and acuity level of patient.
  • Plan break timings for her/his shift staff to ensure that patient care is not interrupted.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms while managing patient care.
  • Participate actively in patient /family & staff education as per identified needs.
  • Provide safe environment for the patients and him/ herself by following infection control policies.
  • Ensure patients under observation are having food basing on the current condition and medical history of the patient.
  • Ensure timely, comprehensive and complete nursing documentation on unit specific forms as per standard.
  • Evaluates the level of patients’ satisfaction and takes appropriate measures in case of discontent.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety activities like incident reporting, identification of issues, execution of interventions etc.
  • Assist in preparing reports of monthly nursing activities and submit the same as required.
  • Any other roles assigned by the Supervisor or his /her Designee.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Certificate in Nursing from recognized Collage or School of Nursing
  • Current registration with the Tanzania Nurses and Midwives Council (TNMC)
  • Maintains a Valid Nursing Licensure in the United Republic of Tanzania
  • Minimum of 2 Years of experience in nursing practice.

Registered Nurse – (1 Post) at Morogoro

Reporting to: The Nurse Incharge

Position Summary

He/she provides safe, competent, individualized nursing care to patients in outpatient clinics in accordance with policies, procedures, quality improvement and patient safety norms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough head to toe assessment and reassessment to all patient at the OHC. Elements of assessment include presented complains and related details, pain assessment and risk assessment.
  • Provides safe, competent, individualized nursing care to patients with care needs ranging from basic to complex in accordance with policies and procedures and quality improvement and patient safety norms.
  • Checks and ensures neatness and cleanliness is maintained in the OHC.
  • Prepares nursing timetable and ensures departmental rotation is well arranged.
  • Develop a program for evidence-based nursing triage in the Center.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based nursing program (nursing assessment in proper formats)
  • Ensure timely, comprehensive and complete nursing documentation on unit specific forms as per standard.
