Job Overview

Jhpiego is looking for an exceptionally dynamic and effective leader to fill the position of Senior Director for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH).

The Senior Director for RMNCAH will lead Jhpiego’s broad portfolio of work in reproductive health; family planning; maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health; and safe surgery, including the appropriate and comprehensive integration of those programs across health systems.

They will align the goals of the RMNCAH unit with those of the organization, ensuring that Jhpiego remains at the forefront of the public health responses in these areas, leveraging the most cutting-edge tools and approaches to drive accelerated health impact.

The Senior Director will provide strategic leadership to ensure technical excellence in the area of ​​RMNCAH across the organization, represent Jhpiego globally, and develop and maintain relationships that grow Jhpiego’s portfolio and maintain its exceptional reputation as a global leader.

The Senior Director will also oversee and ensure quality technical assistance to country programs, supervise and manage an exceptional team of technical experts, and oversee programmatic and financial progress towards unit goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Through a variety of approaches, demonstrate, build, and enhance brand-recognition of Jhpiego as a global leader in RMNCAH.
  • Drive the development of the vision and strategy for RMNCAH and oversee the progress of program implementation to achieve public health impact. Ensure an integrated approach across the breadth of the program and technical approaches within the unit.
  • Lead a broad team for the conceptualization and development of new programmatic approaches to FP/RH, MNCAH, and Safe Surgery for Jhpiego and the execution of the RMNCAH unit work plan and special initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain excellent professional relationships with governments, global institutions, colleagues, and donors worldwide to maximize Jhpiego’s impact and leverage, including developing new business opportunities, securing funding, and contributing to positioning, leads development, and proposal design and production. Regularly provide analysis of business development opportunities, trends, and global funding.
  • Ensure global leadership for Jhpiego in comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and integrated approaches to RMNCAH promotion, protection, and management by serving on external advisory or working groups and representing Jhpiego in key global and regional technical meetings and committees. Present state-of-the-art practices to USG, other governments, donors, and key stakeholders. Participate in the production of global guidance and reference documents, participating in or leading external advisory or working groups and driving peer-reviewed publication efforts for the unit.
  • Design and support systems that ensure that Jhpiego’s clinical programs are of high quality to achieve impact. Ensure application of Jhpiego’s quality assurance standards and technical approaches and define measures of success for Jhpiego’s programs. Identify country and global quality issues and trends and recommend strategies to resolve them.
  • Support processes that allow for capacity building, coaching, and mentoring of staff and local partners in all aspects of RMNCAH, and Safe Surgery, including defining the strategic direction for planning and organizing capacity building, mentoring, and development activities of staff and in-country partners.
  • Work collaboratively across other technical implementation units and leverage the work of cross-cutting units including the Innovation Hub and the Data & Analytics Hub to identify and recommend the areas in which Jhpiego should build strong partner relationships related to frontier technology, advanced and predictive analytics, and health system building blocks.; create and lead multi-dimensional, crosscutting initiatives that improve health programs; and harmonize quality programming for maximum integration of approaches across all Jhpiego clinical, technical, and program areas.
  • Support and guide the use of data for improving program impact. Ensure coordinated and quality provision of technical assistance to country programs, drawing upon global data and trends to identify strategic opportunities and needed shifts in technical approaches.
  • Lead a dynamic team of Directors and other senior-level technical and clinical staff, all of whom are respected leaders in their respective fields. Ensure strong personnel management of the RMNCAH unit and support efforts to build capacity for program implementation approaches, especially in field offices.
  • Facilitate a supportive environment for unit directors to advance high quality solutions for their respective technical areas and create opportunities for cross-collaboration.
  • Ensure the latest technical guidance on FP/RH, MNCAH, and Safe Surgery is widely disseminated and used. Champion knowledge management principles within and outside the organization, including developing appropriate learning objectives, ensuring the transfer of state-of-the-art knowledge, lessons learned and best practices are shared with staff globally, ensuring that RMNCAH work is published and disseminated widely in appropriate channels, and by initiating and leading global forums for sharing and generating consensus and developing joint activities.
  • Provide strategic implementation and other technical assistance and strategic guidance to Jhpiego’s Global Programs Office and support country teams.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Medical doctorate degree and experienced OB-GYN;
  • Familiarity with global initiatives, partners, and historical trends in RMNCAH;
  • Strong clinical background and technical experience in RMNCAH, especially management, technical support, and programmatic direction;
  • Strong understanding of health systems challenges in LMIC;
  • Proven, demonstrable leadership skills and expertise in strategic program planning, implementation, and management;
  • Proven experience in leading highly skilled and qualified technical personnel;
  • Excellent understanding of USAID and other donor systems, structures, and processes;
  • Strong change management, results oriented, and decision-making skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with excellent interpersonal, relationship management and English written and oral presentation skills;
  • Appreciation for socio-cultural differences in countries, preferably having lived and worked in one or more low resource settings;
  • Awareness of, sensitivity to, and experience in working in multiple socio-economic settings and with multi-cultural staff and groups;
  • Ability to work in complex environments charged with multiple tasks, short deadlines, and intense pressure to perform;
  • Support Jhpiego’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Ability to travel up to 30%, primarily to low- and middle-income countries;
  • A healthy disregard for the impossible and interest in challenging the status quo in order to drive accelerated impact.

Other Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in health service provision, public health, or health administration
  • Peer recognition by leaders in the field of RMNCAH;
  • Fluency in a second language (French, Portuguese, or other major national language relevant to area(s) of focus).

Salary Range:

The salary range for this role is expected to be $150,165 – $200,220
