Organizational Context and Scope

Under the overall supervision of the Chief Migration Health Nurseand direct supervision of the Senior Migration Health Nurse, the successful candidate will be responsible for the carrying-out the following duties and responsibilities in relation to the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Kasulu/Makere, Tanzania

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide general assistance with daily nursing activities in the Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC), including:
    • Conducting medical examinations,
      • Such as checking vital signs, weight, height, and visual acuity, and
      • Collecting blood, urine, or sputum samples as required.
    • Supporting TB management, including Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS).
    • Assisting with infection prevention and control mechanisms.
    • Supporting pre-departure procedures and medical movements.
    • Assisting with documentation, certification, and information transmission.
    • Transporting samples to the laboratory safely and efficiently.
    • Liaising with the laboratory and ensuring timely receipt of results and reports.
    • Assisting in other technical areas as needed.
  • Provide support and information to migrants and/or refugees regarding migration health assessment, focusing on Chest X-ray, immunization, and sputum testing for those who require it. Also, provide information on treatments and referrals.
  • Assist nurses with proper identification and follow-up by:
    • Conducting comprehensive history taking.
    • Collecting accurate and thorough bio-data.
    • Verifying IDs for each step of the health assessment process.
    • Maintaining a register of applicants undergoing health investigations and testing.
  • Follow the Health Assessment Programme’s checklists and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while maintaining standard universal precautions within MHAC.
  • Assist nurses in medical emergency management, chronic case management, and related procedures. Arrange specialist consultations and ensure receipt of specialist reports as assigned.
  • Support proper and accurate record-keeping of applicants throughout the migration health assessment process, including uploading medical reports on required databases.
  • Perform national medical escort duties when required to ensure migrants receive continued care throughout all phases of migration.
  • Assist the team with checking medical invoices.
  • Prepare a list of medical drugs and supplies for ordering as requested by the Migration Health Physician or Migration Health Nurse. Assist in inventory taking, confirmation, and receipt of ordered drugs and supplies in coordination with the administrative and finance teams.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • High School diploma and three years of relevant work experience, or
  • Intermediate degree in Nursing with at least three years of relevant work experience, or
  • Desirable: Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution with one-year relevant work experience.
  • Valid medical practicing license.

Experience

  • Training or working experience in areas such as tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing, or public health is advantageous.
  • Computer literacy required, including proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access).

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.
  • Working knowledge of French and Spanish is desirable.
