About HJFMRI

The HJF Medical Research International, Inc Tanzania (HJFMRI-T) collaboratively supports PEPFAR-funded HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment activities in the Southern Highlands and within the Tanzania People’s Defense Forces (TPDF) 21 facilities.

The HJFMRI-T is a local non-profit that has aided these efforts since 2004 through the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) as a Donor.

PEPFAR activities operate closely with the Tanzania Ministry of Health and the President’s Office of the Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) through the Regional Administrative Secretary.

HJFMRI-T Functions

The organization provides care and treatment for those affected by HIV/AIDS and actively engages in HIV and AIDS programming.

Their support spans the Southern Highlands Zone regions: Mbeya, Rukwa, Katavi, Songwe, and Ruvuma (VMMC Only). They also support TPDF in executing a comprehensive HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment program in 21 military sites across the country.

Requirements for ART Nurse (12 Positions)

Major Functions

Under the direct supervision of the CTC in-charge, the ART nurse will engage in providing HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, and support services to clients in respective facilities within supported districts.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend clients attending CTC to ensure services provided comply with HIV guidelines.
  • Coordinate and provide routine and extensive adherence counseling before ART initiation and throughout the care continuum.
  • Perform HIV testing services (HTS) using a screening tool at the OPD, identifying eligible clients for HIV testing and providing services to all eligible patients at the health facility.
  • Provide assisted partner notification services for all index clients.
  • Collaborate with facility staff to ensure the Linkage case management model is well understood and implemented for all newly identified clients.
  • Offer post-test counseling for identified HIV positives with lay counselors (expert patients and HIV positive CBHSPS).
  • Supervise and coordinate lay counselors to ensure all identified positives are attached, followed, and enrolled in ART.
  • Provide first adherence counseling services to newly positive clients, emphasizing the importance of early enrollment in care and ART.
  • Assess and document all referrals, making follow-ups and reporting on referral outcomes.
  • Administer HIV screening tools for PITC to all clients attending at OPD and other entry points, enabling HIV testing.
  • Ensure immediate care initiation for all identified HIV-positive clients on the same day (Same day ART initiation).
  • Screen the pediatric population with optimized PITC using a specific screening tool.
  • Ensure all positive children start optimized ART and transition those on old regimens to TLD.
  • Gradually facilitate HIV disclosure and adherence within the pediatric population to improve retention and viral suppression.
  • Participate in children Saturday clinics and teen clubs to improve adherence and viral suppression.
  • Ensure availability of pediatric job aids, posters, and working tools in collaboration with CTC.
  • Create demand for HIV viral load sample collection and document the daily collection of samples in collaboration with CTC.
  • Screen all clients for TB and initiate IPT for eligible clients on a daily basis, ensuring proper documentation in collaboration with CTC.
  • Screen HIV-positive women for Cervical Cancer and initiate treatment for those found to be positive.
  • Collaborate closely with CTC to coordinate service provision, implementation, and monitoring of care and treatment services, RCH/PMTCT activities, early infant diagnosis (EID), and TB/HIV collaborative activities.
  • Provide telephone support, appointment reminders, and counseling on HIV-status disclosure, partner/family testing, and barriers to care among clients with cell phones.
  • Submit daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to respective authorities.
  • Fulfill other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or Certificate in Nursing from a recognized institution and registration with the relevant professional body in Tanzania.
  • 2 years’ experience providing HIV/AIDS clinical care in Tanzania or previous experience working in HIV/AIDS care and treatment.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
  • Willingness to remain at the working station 100%.
