The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST), part of The Aga Khan Development Network, is completing a significant phase III expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2024.
This expansion focuses on establishing a comprehensive cancer center through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Tanzanian-based CCP partners. The key partners include the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC), Ocean Road Cancer Research Institute (ORCI), Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), and Muhimbili National Hospital. The Institute Curie provides technical support for delivering a full range of cancer services.
The proposed Tanzania Comprehensive Cancer Centre aims to enhance cancer care in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. Its four major components include improving and expanding existing Oncology infrastructure, building staff capacity in participating institutions, strengthening community Cancer Care practices, and fostering relationships with stakeholders for joint research initiatives.
The Aga Khan Hospital is JCI Accredited, signifying a level of quality and patient service comparable to the world’s best hospitals. It serves as the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, offering Postgraduate Medical Education programs leading to Master of Medicine in various specialties.
